Every visitor to Curaçao walks through Punda. Far fewer sleep in it, and that is a quiet mistake. The oldest quarter of Willemstad, founded in 1634 and painted every color the Dutch never allowed at home, is compact, walkable, and lived-in, and staying inside it changes the trip: you get the waterfront at sunrise and the streets after the day visitors leave, which is when the quarter is most itself.

I.Why Punda first
Punda is the only base on the island where you need nothing else. The Handelskade waterfront is at the end of the street, the Queen Emma Bridge swings open two minutes away, the Floating Market sells fruit off Venezuelan boats three minutes away, and a swim in the Caribbean at Punda's small pier-sheltered cove is closer than most hotel pools. No taxi, no rental car, no transfer: the UNESCO city is your lobby.
It is also the best-connected quarter for day trips. Buses and taxis stage around the market, and every tour operator on the island collects from Punda hotels first. II.The rhythm of the quarter
Punda keeps hours worth knowing about. On multi-ship cruise days the shopping streets fill between roughly 10:30 and 14:30, then empty as quickly as they filled. Mornings belong to shopkeepers and coffee; evenings belong to locals, harbor lights and dinner terraces; and Thursday nights the quarter throws its weekly street party, Punda Vibes, with live music under the arcades.
Staying overnight means you get the two best shifts — early and late — while the day crowds are somebody else's problem. Light sleepers should simply ask for a room away from the main street; the stone walls of the old monuments do the rest.
III.Staying on Breedestraat

First, high season runs December through April and the good rooms in the old town are few — the whole quarter holds a fraction of the beds of one resort strip, so book earlier than feels necessary. Second, arrival is easiest on foot: cars cannot enter the pedestrian core, so plan a taxi to the quarter's edge and a two-minute walk, and let your hotel hold luggage on either side of check-in.
