Fireworks are a separate matter from the pagara, and they are regulated. In the 2024 to 2025 season the Antilliaans Dagblad reported 23 stand permits issued by the Ministry of Economic Development, 13 in the east of the island and 10 in the west, and nu.CW reported a sale window of 27 to 31 December, 08:00 to 20:00, from licensed stands only. Where do people watch the midnight fireworks?
The fireworks go up from both sides of Sint Anna Bay at once, so the bay itself is the auditorium, with the Handelskade on the Punda side and Otrobanda opposite. Brionplein in Otrobanda is described as the main public gathering point, where families arrive early with chairs, tables, party tents and home cooked food to claim a spot, and where there are live bands and a blessing by the bishop at midnight. The crowd spills onto the Queen Emma pontoon bridge, which is free, pedestrian only and about 2 minutes on foot from 3 Breedestraat. Larger organised displays also run at Mambo Beach and Jan Thiel, away from downtown.
How long do the midnight fireworks last?
No honest figure can be given. Published accounts disagree, one describing about 40 minutes and another a deafening climax of about 15 minutes followed by scattered fireworks all night. Because the sources contradict each other, this page does not time it.
What the accounts do agree on: the display comes from both sides of the bay simultaneously, the harbour tugboats sound their horns, and individual fireworks continue long after the main burst. Plan to be outside shortly before midnight and to stay out.
Are the shops in Punda open over the holidays?
